About us

A driving school built on doing it properly

Limtai Driving School trains drivers in Kampala from two branches, in Kamwokya and Kireka. We are part of Limtai Investment Company Limited, and we teach one thing: how to handle a vehicle safely on Ugandan roads, in real traffic, with a qualified instructor beside you.

Our instructors are experienced trainers, not casual drivers earning on the side. They teach on dual-marked vehicles carrying the roof sign, so other road users can see a learner is at the wheel and give you the room you need. You will learn on Kampala's actual roads — the roundabouts, the boda traffic, the junctions you will drive every day — because a driver who has only circled a yard is not a driver yet.

We handle the paperwork too. Learner's permits, the IOV test booking, permit processing, renewals and class upgrades all go through us, so you are not queuing at offices trying to work out which form you need. You train, we deal with the process.

Our fees are published in full on this page. There are no extras added at the end, and no one at Limtai will ever ask you for a payment outside the accounts listed here.

Why choose Limtai

What you get that you would not get elsewhere

Plenty of schools will take your money and put you in a car. These are the things we think actually matter.

Professional instructors

Experienced, patient trainers who teach a method rather than shortcuts. They are there to make you a driver who can handle a wet roundabout at dusk, not one who can only just scrape through a test.

Affordable, published fees

Every price is on this page — full package from UGX 650,000, lessons from UGX 100,000 a week, renewals from UGX 180,000. You know what you are paying before you walk in, and nothing is added later.

Flexible training schedules

Weekday, weekend or evening — you choose. Work Monday to Friday? Take Saturday and Sunday sessions. Free only after work? We run evening classes. Travelling soon? Short-time sessions compress the course.

Two branches, one number

Train in Kamwokya or Kireka, whichever is closer. One phone number reaches both, and your records follow you if your circumstances change mid-course.

Paperwork handled end to end

Learner's permit, IOV test booking, permit processing, renewals and class upgrades. We prepare and follow up every application, and tell you the moment your permit is ready to collect.

Marked, road-legal vehicles

Every training car carries the Limtai livery and the roof sign, so other drivers know a learner is at the wheel. If a car does not carry it, it is not one of ours.

Common questions

The things learners ask us most often. If your question is not here, call or WhatsApp us on 0767 936 245 or 0709 787 735.

How much does it cost to learn to drive at Limtai?

Our full package for fresh learners is UGX 650,000 with a one-year permit, UGX 750,000 with a three-year permit, and UGX 800,000 with a five-year permit. That covers your learner's permit, theory, three weeks of practical training, the IOV test and the permit itself.

If you only want lessons, that is UGX 100,000 per week for five days. Weekend classes are UGX 50,000 per session and evening classes UGX 40,000 per session. Permit renewal starts at UGX 180,000. The full table is in our fees section above.

How long does it take to learn to drive?

Our full package runs for three weeks, five days a week — fifteen practical sessions in total. After that you sit the IOV test, and the permit takes as long as the authorities need to process and print it.

If three weeks of weekdays does not suit you, weekend and evening classes cover the same syllabus on a schedule you choose, and short-time sessions compress it into a shorter period.

Do you teach automatic or manual?

Both. Tell us which you want when you register and we will assign an instructor and a vehicle to match.

If you are unsure, most learners in Uganda train on manual, since a manual permit lets you drive either. Learning on automatic only is quicker but narrows what you can drive afterwards.

What if I have lost my driving permit?

We handle replacements. Bring a valid National ID or passport, any copy or record of the lost permit, and a police report if it was lost or stolen.

If the permit has simply expired rather than been lost, a renewal is usually the right route and starts at UGX 180,000. Bring what you have and we will tell you which applies.

What documents do I need to apply for a driving permit?

To begin, bring a valid National ID or passport and passport-size photographs. That is enough to start your learner's permit application and your lessons.

Before the practical stage you will also need your learner's permit, which we process for you. If you are applying for the permit only, without training, bring your certificate of competence and evidence that you have passed the IOV test.

Do I have to sit the IOV test?

Yes. Every applicant for a driving permit in Uganda must pass the official practical test administered by the Inspectorate of Vehicles. There is no route around it, and a permit cannot be issued without it.

We prepare you for that test with mock testing on the actual manoeuvres, book your slot, and send an instructor with you on the day.

What is the difference between a 1, 3 and 5 year permit?

Only how long the permit stays valid before it must be renewed. The training, the test and the permit itself are identical.

A longer term costs more upfront but works out cheaper per year, because you pay the processing fees once instead of repeatedly. Most beginners choose three years. Professional and daily drivers usually take five.

Can I renew a permit that has already expired?

Yes. Bring your expired permit, a valid National ID or passport, and the renewal fees, and we handle the application and follow-up so you do not have to queue.

Driving on an expired permit is an offence, so start the renewal before the expiry date if you can.

I already know how to drive. Do I need the full course?

Probably not. Book a Limtai Test Drive first: a short assessment drive where an instructor scores you against our checklist and tells you honestly where you stand.

You leave with a recommendation on which package fits and roughly how many lessons you actually need, rather than paying for a beginner course you do not require.

Do you have classes for people who work weekdays?

Yes. Our Weekend Class runs on Saturdays and Sundays and covers exactly the same content as the weekday programme, ending with the same certificate of competence.

If you need to finish faster, Short Time Sessions compress the same syllabus into more frequent lessons.

Can I add another class of vehicle to my existing permit?

Yes, through our Licence Class Upgrade. Common upgrades are moving from a light vehicle class to a heavier commercial class, or adding a motorcycle class.

Bring your current permit so we can confirm which classes you hold and which you are eligible to add. You will train on the new vehicle class and be tested on it before the endorsement is added.

Where are you located, and how do I pay?

We have two branches in Kampala: the main branch on Bukoto Street, Plot 75 in Kamwokya, and a branch at the Lico Holdings Building in Kireka, opposite the Shell petrol station. One number reaches both.

Pay by MTN merchant code 192393, Airtel merchant code 4357025, or bank transfer to Centenary Bank account 3100122633. All three are in the name of Limtai Investment Company Limited. If a payment request reaches you in any other name, call us before paying.
