How much does driving school cost in Uganda?

Ask three driving schools in Kampala what a course costs and you will get three answers that cannot be compared, because each one bundles different things. One quotes training only. Another includes the permit. A third quotes low and adds the test fee later.

So before the numbers, the more useful question: what is supposed to be in the price?

What a complete package should include

Your learner's permit, applied for and processed
Theory and highway code instruction
Practical lessons — ask how many, and how long each one is
Use of the training vehicle
Mock testing before the real thing
Booking and attending the IOV practical test
Your certificate of competence
Processing the driving permit itself

If a quote is missing two or three of these, it is not cheaper. It is smaller.

What Limtai charges

Full package, fresh learner — UGX 650,000 with a 1-year permit, UGX 750,000 with 3 years, UGX 800,000 with 5 years. Everything in the list above is inside that number.
Driving lessons only — UGX 100,000 per week, five days.
Weekend classes — UGX 50,000 per session.
Evening classes — UGX 40,000 per session.
Ordinary driving permit — from UGX 380,000, if you have already trained and only need the permit processed.
Licence renewal — from UGX 180,000.

Why the permit length changes the price

The training is identical whichever you choose. What changes is how long the permit lasts before you have to renew it.

The arithmetic is worth doing. A one-year permit at UGX 650,000 means returning within twelve months and paying a renewal. Five years at UGX 800,000 is UGX 150,000 more today and nothing again until 2031. Unless money is tight this month, the longer permit is usually the cheaper decision.

Same logic applies to renewals: 1 year is UGX 180,000, 5 years is UGX 380,000. Five times the cover for a little over twice the price.

Questions to ask any school before you pay

How many lessons, and how long is each? "A course" is not an answer. Ours is fifteen sessions across three weeks.
Is the IOV test fee included? This is where quotes most often diverge.
Is the permit included, and for how long?
Do I train on real roads or only in a yard? Yard-only training produces drivers who panic in traffic.
Are the vehicles marked and insured for instruction?
What happens if I fail the test? Get the answer before you need it.
Who am I paying? Payments should go to a company account in the school's registered name — never to an individual's personal number.

Is the cheapest school the best value?

Almost never. The costs that hurt come after the course: a failed test you pay to retake, a permit that expires sooner than you expected, or a habit learned badly that costs you a bumper in your first month of driving.

What you are actually buying is competence. Judge a school on how many lessons you get, whether you train in real traffic, and whether the instructors teach a method or just supervise you steering.
